Signs That Your Trailer Suspension Needs a Repair

Blog

Occasionally trailers need repairs, and one of the repairs your trailer may need is for its suspension. Ideally, you should monitor your trailer for issues and take it in for repairs proactively. That helps to prevent the issues from getting worse. Here are some signs that your trailer suspension needs a repair.

1. Look for Unusual Damage to Your Cargo

If you normally haul a certain type of cargo with your trailer, that experience should be relatively uniform. However, if your cargo starts to get damaged, that may be a sign that your suspension isn't supporting your load as it should. To determine if the suspension is the problem (rather than road conditions, securing the load incorrectly or other issues), you may want to look for some of the other issues mentioned below.

2. Make Sure the Trailer Sits Evenly

Park your trailer on a level patch of ground. Does it look uneven? If it's slanting to one side or the other or if the back or the front is uneven, that can also indicate an issue with the suspension.

3. See If the Tyres Are Wearing Unevenly

If the suspension has been uneven for a while, you may see uneven wear and tear on your tyres. In particular, look for excess wear on the outer edges of your tyres. To ensure this is from the suspension, double check the air pressure on the tyres. If the pressure is too low, that can also lead to uneven wear on the tyres.

4. Watch for Excess Movement While Towing

The suspension is designed to cradle your cargo as you haul your trailer. To see if it's working correctly, you may want to have someone else haul your trailer and watch as it moves. If it's bumping up and down excessively, even when full of cargo, that's a sign that your suspension is worn out and needs to be replaced.

5. Check Suspension After an Accident

If your trailer is in an accident, the axle and the suspension can get damaged. After an accident, you may want to get these parts checked out. Ideally, you should have a specialist look everything over before the damage spreads to your cargo or ruins your tyres.

Suspension is a critical part of your trailer, and if it's damaged, your trailer won't be able to work as it should. Keep the above tips in mind, and if you see an issue, contact a company that handles trailer repairs as soon as possible.

I Like Driving in My Car

Hello, my name is Brian and if there is one thing I like to do, it is to go driving in my car. There is no better way to relax and unwind than heading out on the open road. I am not an auto mechanic or a car dealer, but over the years I have spent many years working with people such people and they have been kind enough to teach me a thing or two about buying and maintain automobiles. I have decided to start this blog so I can share everything I have learnt with the rest of the world.
